A bloodshot eye is used to describe a reddened eye. This can be quite alarming upon seeing it. A bloodshot eye might manifest with a few noticeable red blood vessels or can turn the eye completely red. There are various reasons why an individual ends up with a bloodshot eye. It is not advisable to overlook this condition since it might be a warning indication of a certain condition.
Common causes of a bloodshot eye
Subconjunctival hemorrhage
The condition causes the white part of the eye to turn completely red. This occurs once one of the blood vessels breaks or bursts below the conjunctiva. Since the blood has no place to go, it spreads out.
In case the vessels leak out blood significantly, it can result to a bulbous subconjunctival hemorrhage where blood builds up in which the eye appears swollen and pouches outwards. Even though this condition appears frightening, it will not cause any lasting damage to the eye.
Dry eye syndrome
The usual cause of a bloodshot eye is dry eye syndrome which occurs once there is insufficient natural tears to maintain proper lubrication of the front part of the eye. The eye becomes irritated and turns red.
This can occur if the individual stares at a computer screen for long periods of time, not getting enough sleep or wearing contact lenses for long time. Even certain medications can trigger the condition if they are taken chronically or from hormonal changes within the body. Additionally, it also develops if the glands producing tears are clogged up with oil and sweat.
Allergies
The eyes can turn bloodshot due to allergies. The red eyes linked with itching and burning are often triggered by allergies.
The individual ends up with a bloodshot eye since the blood vessels in the front part of the eye becomes dilated and larger. The fluid builds up and causes the swelling.
Alcohol
Consumption of alcohol can cause some individuals to develop bloodshot eyes. It is important to note that alcohol causes vasodilation in which the vessels on the white part of the eye becomes larger and even more visible. Additionally, alcohol can trigger dehydration and causes the eyes to appear tired and reddened.
Conjunctivitis
This condition can cause bloodshot eyes which is an infection or inflammation of the conjunctiva. Other causes of conjunctivitis include viruses, bacteria and allergies. When it comes to viral conjunctivitis, it is often linked with red eyes.
