Heat intolerance or hypersensitivity to heat arises if the body is not controlling its temperature properly.

The body regulates temperature by preserving a balance between hot and cold. The hypothalamus is a part of the brain responsible for controlling the body temperature. If it becomes too hot, the hypothalamus transmits a signal via the nerves to the skin, instructing it to increase the production of sweat. If the sweat evaporates from the skin, it cools down the body.

What are the causes?

There are a variety of causes of heat intolerance that you should be familiar with such as:

  • Medications – certain medications are the usual cause of heat intolerance especially, drugs for allergies, blood pressure medications and decongestants.
  • Caffeine – this is a stimulant that increases the heart rate and speeds up metabolism. This causes the body temperature to increase.
  • Multiple sclerosis – this is a debilitating ailment affecting the central nervous system. The condition affects the protective covering or myelin of the nerves of the central nervous system.
  • Hyperthyroidism – this occurs if the thyroid releases excess thyroxine. This hormone affects the metabolism of the body. Since the metabolism is increased, it results to an increase in the body temperature.

Indications

If an individual suffering from heat intolerance feels as if he/she is overheating. The condition is characterized by significant sweating. The symptoms might arise gradually but once intolerance develops, it might last for 1-2 days.

Other usual indications of intolerance include:

  • Weakness
  • Nausea
  • Headache
  • Cramping
  • Dizziness

In addition, the heartbeat is relatively faster than normal.

Management

  • Stay in a cool environment
  • Increase the intake of fluids to keep the body hydrated.
  • Wear lightweight cotton-based fabrics that allow air to reach the skin and provide a cooling effect.
  • When playing sports, use protective gear such as armbands, gloves and hats if needed.
