Recovery period for an ankle sprain

Fact Checked

An ankle sprain is due to the overstretching or tearing of the ligaments surrounding the joint. The recovery time usually depends on the severity of the damage to the ligaments.

How ankle sprains are graded?

Doctors categorize sprains in three levels. It is important that you are familiar with the three levels of sprains so that you know the appropriate measures to perform. You can learn this in any first aid course, thus enrolling in one can greatly help.

  • Grade 1 – This type of sprain requires first aid care at home and rest in order to control the minor swelling.
  • Grade 2 – This sprain involves larger tears in the ligaments and an increase in the swelling and tenderness. It can also result to the instability of the joint.
  • Grade 3 – Also known as severe sprains, occurs with complete tearing of the ligament. These sprains require the longest recovery time and high level of care.

Take note that the full recovery of most ankle sprains will take 4-6 weeks.

Stage one of recovery

Always bear in mind that all cases of ankle sprains require the initial level of treatment right after the injury occurs.

Always bear in mind that all cases of ankle sprains require the initial level of treatment right after the injury occurs. This stage lasts for a week and concentrates on controlling the swelling, tenderness and pain. The RICE method is best approach at this stage. The injured ankle must be allowed to rest by avoiding weight since it can aggravate the injury. Apply ice packs covered in towel or cloth for 15-20 minutes several times in day for 3 days after the injury. A compression bandage must be applied to minimize the swelling but make sure that it is not too tight that the circulation is disrupted. Lastly, elevate the affected limb above the level of the heart for the initial 48 hours to reduce the swelling and tenderness in the joint. In most cases, the doctor might recommend a cast or splint to be used for 3 weeks for grade 2 and 3 sprains.

Stage two of recovery

For severe ankle sprains, physical therapy is recommended. It involves simple exercises that are performed 1-2 weeks during the second stage of the recovery period. These exercises will help restore the normal range of motion to the ankle. Take note that these exercises are specifically tailored to his/her injury without resistance. Once the individual masters the exercises, he/she can increase the tension and resistance to the ankle.

Stage three of recovery

The third stage complete the recovery period where the individual resumes his/her normal activity level. Initially, the only activities allowed are those that do not involve turning or twisting movements of the ankle. Once strength returns to the ankle, the individual will be assisted by a physical therapist in order to restore his/her normal range of motion in more strenuous activities. The number of weeks or months required in order to return to peak form depends on the grade of the injury, level of fitness and the type of activities the individual engages in.
