Safe methods to care for a fever

Fact Checked

Fever can cause discomfort in both children and adults. Luckily, there are measures that you can do to bring down the body temperature safely. The presence of fever is simply an indication that the body is fighting an infection.

The internal body temperature rises as a defense mechanism in an attempt to make the body warm enough so that the invading microorganism could not survive. In this manner, fever is a beneficial action. On the other hand, it can also cause discomfort in which an individual feels miserable and achy.

Measures to bring down fever

  • Fever reducers such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen can effectively bring down a fever. Children as young as 2 months old can be given acetaminophen but for infants younger than 3 months with fever, a consultation with a doctor is required. Aspirin should not be given to children but can be used by adults over 18 years old. These medications work rapidly within 4-8 hours.

  • Taking a bath can help bring down a fever, but make sure that it is not a cold bath. Even though cold seems to work better, using cold water will trigger shivering that can actually increase the internal temperature. The bath water should be in a comfortable temperature to relax the individual as well as bring down the fever.
  • Increase the intake of fluids to keep the body hydrated especially if fever is present. A high body temperature can lead to dehydration more rapidly. The individual should be provided with cool liquids to reduce the risk of becoming dehydrated and also helps cool off the body.
  • Use a cool pack under the arms and in the groin area to bring down the temperature. This is commonly used if an individual is overheated due to exterior factors but can also be used if fever is high. Take note that the fever might return after the cool packs are removed. You can also utilize a cool washcloth if an ice pack is not available.

Important factors about fever

Many individuals are concerned when it comes to fever where some see a doctor, but it eventually subsides if proper measures are provided. An exception to this rule is fever among young infants.

Children below 3 months old with a body temperature higher than 100.3 degrees F requires assessment by a doctor. As for infants between 3-6 months old with temperature higher than 102 degrees, a doctor should be consulted as well.

Remember that infants might have serious conditions that trigger the symptom and they may need special tests to ensure that they are properly managed.
