Sepsis among elderly

Sepsis is a severe systemic response of the body to an infection. Generally, the whole body is experiencing an inflammatory response. Remember that this is a dangerous condition that necessitates immediate medical care.

The elderly is typically affected and face a higher risk than younger individuals.

What are the indications?

What are the additional symptoms?

Depending on the cause of the infection and how long it has progressed, the following might also be present:

  • Confusion
  • Weakness
  • Chills
  • Bluish, mottled or dusky skin

Risk for septic shock

If sepsis progresses, the individual might end up with septic shock. This condition is defined as low blood pressure that does not respond to treatment. Remember that this is a serious condition that can result to death.

Always bear in mind that sepsis is a serious condition. The elderly and those with other health conditions are at risk for detrimental complications. If treatment is started early, the better chances for recovery.
