Abnormal flow of blood
It is important to note that migraines can start and remain localized on a single side of the head. Even though the exact cause of migraines is still not fully understood, it is believed that the blood vessels initially constrict and then expand, thus allowing an increase in the flow of blood to a specific part of the brain which instigates pain and pressure. Remember that this can occur in any part of the brain or only on the left side. Diet, alcohol, loud noises, stress, certain smells and other triggers can initiate a migraine to occur.
Sinusitis
Sinusitis is a condition in which the lining of the sinus cavities are inflamed or irritated. Being exposed to cigarette smoke, respiratory conditions as well as seasonal allergies can contribute to the condition. The condition can occur in several sinuses or localized to a sinus cavity on the left side of the face or head.
Take note that sinus headaches can often end up misdiagnosed as migraine headaches. The distinctive difference is that migraine headaches typically occur along with other symptoms.
Weather changes, heredity and smoking
It is important to note that cluster headaches typically occur on only one side of the head and often 2-3 or more times in a row for days. These types of headaches tend to occur more among smokers and can also be instigated by changes in the weather. When it comes to cluster headaches, it can also be mistaken for allergies. Additionally, the tendency for cluster headaches can also be inherited or initiated by a head injury.
Aneurysm
In case there is an aneurysm in the left side of the brain, it can trigger a migraine-type or cluster headache on the left side. Always remember that aneurysms can be congenital or occur as a result of an elevated blood pressure. In some circumstances, aneurysms do not generate symptoms until they become large and about to burst in which the headache can be severe. Headaches that are due to aneurysms can also instigate symptoms when the individual engages in physical activity.
It is important to seek immediate medical care right away if the headache is severe or somewhat different that previous headaches experienced by the individual. If there is fever, neck stiffness or rash aside from the headache, a doctor should also be consulted.
