A bruised rib can trigger symptoms such as chest pain that becomes worse during movement such as sneezing, deep breathing or forceful coughing. Individuals who engage in contact sports or sustained trauma to the chest area such as during vehicular accidents usually end up with a bruised rib. If the individual suffers from a bruised rib, there are a number of measures that can manage the pain while the body eventually recovers.
Using a compression bandage
The affected rib can be wrapped or covered using a compression bandage. A rib binder can also be used which is similar in appearance to a fabric-based sleeve that easily fits around the torso and provides adequate support to the ribs.
Once a compression bandage or rib binder is in place, the soft tissues are supported in place and any sudden movement that contributes to the pain is limited. These supports are readily available in most pharmacies. Just make sure that you will not wrap too tightly since it will cut off the circulation.
Application of ice
You can apply an ice pack on the bruised rib. There are readily available ice packs or simply create your own by placing ice cubes in a plastic bag wrapped with a hand towel.
Apply the ice pack over the affected area at 10-15 minute increments. By using cold, it helps relieve the inflammation as well as the associated pain.
Pain medications
You can provide the individual with an over-the-counter pain medication such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen. These drugs work by reducing the inflammation of the blood vessels while at the same time relieving the pain as the bruised rib starts to heal. Just make sure that these medications are only used as directed in order to avoid damage to the stomach lining.
Cut down movement
If possible, the individual with a bruised rib should limit any movement such as lifting or twisting movements. Even though it can be frustrating to stay sedentary, spending some time to rest can prevent further stretching and straining of the ribs that results to further injury.
The individual should occasionally engage in exercises such as flexing and pointing the foot to promote good circulation to the extremities while at rest.
Increased fluid intake and balanced diet
It is recommended to increase the fluid intake as well as fiber-rich foods such as fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Take note that constipation is a typical side effect of being sedentary while recovering from a bruised rib. Maintaining a healthy digestive system will reduce the abdominal pain that occurs along with a bruised rib.
Once the pain from a bruised rib does not respond to over-the-counter medications, the doctor might prescribe a more potent pain medication or recommend an anesthetic injection into the affected region. Since a bruised rib can affect how the individual breathes, the injection might be needed in some cases.
