Individuals who are not fond of insects will surely squirm upon seeing a centipede crawl on the floor. Centipedes are capable of injecting poison to an individual using their poison claws. These insects can be found all over the world and tend to vary in size. Generally, the bigger the centipede, the more easily it can bite a human and the bite can be more toxic. One of the biggest species of centipede is found in the Sonoran Desert in the United States where it typically resides beneath logs and rocks.
How a centipede bites
Centipedes do not have fangs or teeth that can be used to bite their prey. Instead, they use poison claws that are located on either side of the centipede’s head in order to deliver a bite to a victim. The poison claws basically inject the poison into a victim which is usually an insect in order to paralyze it. Take note that centipedes use their poison claws on other centipedes and also in a defensive manner on larger animals as well as humans.
What are the symptoms and how to treat a centipede bite?
Always bear in mind that the area where the centipede delivered a bite typically swells up and turns red in color which is similar to a spider bite. As a first aid measure, you have to wash the area around the bite thoroughly using warm water and soap.
You should apply an ice pack or cold compress by soaking a cloth in cold water so that the bite will minimize the swelling. Once a centipede bites, it can cause inflammation and discomfort that can last for several hours.
What are the risks involved?
Even though centipede bites can only last for a few hours causing discomfort and swelling, it also has risks involved such as triggering a severe allergic reaction and extended periods of swelling especially if the victim is a child or individual with a history of allergic reactions to insect stings or bites.
Take note that the swelling must stay within the immediate area of the bite. If the swelling spreads, it is best to consult a doctor. Additionally, if the symptoms do not disappear after 12 hours, it can indicate a serious condition. It is important to seek medical care right away if the bite causes the individual to become nauseous, swelling of the lymph nodes, feels dizzy or experiences a headache as well as signs of tissue damage around the bite site.
How centipedes behave
Centipedes typically stay in areas that are dark and cold such as basements, stored boxes, and clothing and even in shoes. Take note that centipedes are also known to hide in bed sheets. It is essential to be careful not to allow the skin to come in contact with a centipede in order to avoid a bite.
There are various ways in order to avoid getting in contact with a centipede. Initially, you have to shake out clothing that was stored for a long time before putting them on. Shoes must be turned over and tapping them against the ground before putting your feet inside. You should also shake bed sheets before using the bed.
