Aspergillosis is an infection, fungal growth or allergic reaction brought about by the Aspergillus fungus. Generally, the condition is likely to develop among those who have weakened immune system or preexisting lung condition.
What are the types?
In general, various types of aspergillosis affect the body in different ways. Take note that certain conditions and drugs increases the risk for each type.
- Allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis – the fungus triggers allergic reactions such as wheezing and coughing. One is at higher risk if diagnosed with lung issues such as asthma or cystic fibrosis.
The condition is likely to develop among those who have weakened immune system or preexisting lung condition. - Invasive – affects those with a weak immune system due to chemotherapy and conditions such as cancer, leukemia and AIDS. Some of the signs include chest pain, cough, fever and shortness of breath.
- Aspergilloma – an individual with tuberculosis or other lung conditions will allow fungal growth. This ball includes clots, fungus and white blood cells.
Management of aspergillosis
Medications
Use antifungal medications either oral or intravenously for the invasive type. For the allergic form, provide the individual with drugs that suppress the immune system such as prednisone together with the antifungal drugs.
Surgery
In case the fungus triggers an infection in the heart valves, surgery is needed to get rid of the infected regions. After surgery, an extensive antifungal treatment is started.
