Abdominal lump

Abdominal lump

Fact Checked

An abdominal lump is a bulge or swelling that emerges from any region in the abdomen. It is often soft but might be firm depending on the underlying cause.

What are the possible causes of an abdominal lump?

A hernia is the main cause of lumps in the abdomen. Generally, it often arises after straining the abdominal muscles by lifting heavy objects, continuous coughing or being constipated.

There are various forms of hernia that can produce an evident abdominal lump such as:

  • Inguinal hernia – this occurs if there is weakness in the abdominal wall and a section of the intestine or soft tissue protrudes through it. In addition, in most cases, a lump can be seen or felt in the lower abdomen close to the groin and discomfort while bending, coughing or lifting.
  • Umbilical hernia – this occurs around the navel and common among infants and often vanishes as the abdominal wall recuperates on its own.

  • Incisional hernia – this occurs if a previous surgical incision that debilitated the abdominal wall enables the intra-abdominal content to move through

Uncommon causes

If case a hernia is not the cause of an abdominal lump, other possible causes include:

  • Hematoma – this is the buildup of blood beneath the skin from broken blood vessels. Most are due to an injury. If a hematoma forms by the abdomen, it can cause a protrusion and discolored skin.
  • Lipoma – this is a lump of fat that builds up beneath the skin. In addition, it feels as a semi-firm, rubber-like bulge that slightly moves if pressed.
  • Undescended testicle – during the male fetal development, the testicles form in the abdomen and descend into the scrotum. In some instances, one or both might not fully descend.
  • Tumor – even though uncommon, a benign or malignant tumor develops on an organ in the abdomen or skin or muscles that results to an evident lump

Consequently, if the individual feels an abdominal lump that could not be identified, it is best to see a doctor.
