Augmentin

Augmentin: What are the potential side effects?

Fact Checked

Augmentin is a form of antibiotic given to treat various bacterial infections in different parts of the body.

As a combination drug, it includes amoxicillin and clavulanic acid. Generally, clavulanic acid prevents the development of resistance to amoxicillin which allows amoxicillin to fight the bacteria.

Possible side effects of Augmentin

Many individuals who have used Augmentin did not experience any side effects. Generally, it is a safe drug, but side effects can occur.

Essentially, the side effects between the immediate-release and extended-release do not vary.

Common side effects

Once side effects of Augmentin occur, they are usually mild and settle in a few days such as:

Serious side effects

In some cases, serious side effects might arise when using Augmentin.

Severe allergic reaction

A severe allergic reaction to Augmentin is rare but possible. One is likely to end up with this effect if allergic to penicillin or has a history of allergies. The usual signs of a severe allergic reaction include:

  • Wheezing
  • Severe skin rash
  • Difficulty breathing or swallowing

Liver disease

This side effect is rare but reversible if the drug is stopped. In rare instances, it can lead to death.

Antibiotic-associated diarrhea

With this form of diarrhea, it arises from using almost all forms of antibiotics. Generally, the imbalance of bacteria it causes in the gut results to the overgrowth of Clostridium difficile which leads to diarrhea.

Even though rare, it is common among the elderly, those who had the condition before and weakened immune system.
