As more people around Alberta are wearing face masks to prevent the spread of COVID-19, Competition Bureau Canada is making an effort to educate those who make face masks on rules to follow in the Textile Labelling Act.
According to the chief medical officer of health of Alberta, the residents must wear a face mask if they are going somewhere where they will be two meters from another person.
The Bureau stated that businesses or artisans who are creating and selling non-medical face masks should attach a removable label.
The label should state what the fiber composition is and who made it. This is not a new rule – it applies to all textile articles for sale. The label can be a sticker, wrapper, hangtag, etc., or it can be sewed on.

Those who are guilty of an offense in the Textile Labelling Act might face a fine up to $5,000 but when it comes to non-medical face masks, the focus is on education.
