A cough is a sign due to various health conditions. When a doctor assesses a cough, it is either productive or non-productive.
Close look on the types of cough
Non-productive
Generally, a non-productive or dry type does not bring up any mucus or other secretions. It is often due to irritation in the throat. Swelling of the airways can also cause this type. The usual conditions linked with this form include bronchitis and asthma. In some cases, flu, common cold or other upper respiratory conditions are also considered as triggers.
Productive

It is productive if it brings up mucus or other fluids such as blood. In case it is productive and lasts longer than 1-2 weeks, see a doctor for assessment.
Management
It is important to note that one can be irritating whether it is productive or not. If the individual has a cough that is an indication of common cold and there is no need to consult a doctor, some measures that can be done at home include:
- Keep the body properly hydrated – increase the intake of clear liquids throughout the day to replace the fluids lost.
- Use a humidifier – remember that dry air can irritate an existing episode
- Honey – this is a simple home remedy that can help soothe a sore, irritated throat
- Cough medications – use the right medications since suppressants can oftentimes worsen the condition.
