Adequate rest

The application of an ice pack can ease the pain and inflammation.

Since the neck supports the head, it can strain on the neck. This can be remedied by taking some time to relax, usually by taking 1-3 days rest from any strenuous activity. Avoid weight-bearing exercises such as hiking, running or heavy lifting.

Cold therapy

The application of an ice pack can ease the pain and inflammation. It must be applied on the site up to 20 minutes a few times throughout the day.

Warm compress

Alternating cold and heat is also an option. If heat is used, it helps ease the muscle pain and tension. The individual can take a warm shower or apply a heating pad on the neck for up to 20 minutes.

Over-the-counter pain medications

A variety of over-the-counter pain medications can be used to manage the neck pain. The commonly used options include ibuprofen or acetaminophen.

Stretching

Stretching the neck is also beneficial. It is best to wait until the worst pain has settled before performing any stretching exercise. Remember to warm the site first with a heating pad.

Maintain good posture

A slumped posture throughout the day can result to neck pain. Maintain the right posture to avoid straining the ligaments and muscles.

Massage

A sore neck might benefit from a massage. During a session, the neck muscles and other tissues are manipulated to promote the flow of blood and other fluids.
