Crepitus is a popping or grinding sound originating from different parts of the body including the neck. The grinding sound is due to the rubbing of 2 bones against each other.
Neck crepitus is typically seen among the elderly. Remember that this is not a medical condition but simply a symptom of an underlying condition. The treatment is aimed on the underlying cause of the crepitus.
What are the usual causes?
It is important to note that there are various causes for neck crepitus. If there is only occasionally popping in the neck, it is not an issue for concern and does not pose any threat to the joints.
The problem starts if neck crepitus is linked with pain and limits movement of the neck which might indicate some underlying issues with the cervical spine.
Osteoarthritis affecting the cervical spine is the usual cause for neck crepitus. It is important to note that osteoarthritis is a medical condition in which the cartilage between the vertebrae has worn out due to aging and daily wear and tear.
It is usually seen among individuals aged 50 and above. Crepitus is audible if the neck is moved. There is also pain and limited movement of the neck as well as stiffness.
Indications
Neck crepitus is typically accompanied by symptoms that point to arthritis such as neck stiffness, neck pain during movement and limited range of movement. In most cases, the crepitus is not audible and only the individual can hear it.
Some of the other symptoms that are present include:
- Weakness with numbness of the upper extremities
- Headache
- Fatigue
- Sleep disturbances
Management
Neck crepitus is managed based on its exact cause. In case it is due to arthritis, treatment is required with consideration to the limited range of motion as well as the stiffness and pain. Pain medications are given to reduce the pain along with gentle exercises.
If the individual experiences weakness or other neurologic symptoms in the upper extremities, it might indicate a serious underlying condition in the cervical spine.
In case neck crepitus is due to a strong movement of the neck while lifting something or abrupt neck motion, it is not a cause for concern and does not require treatment. For the pain, gentle massage of the neck is required which promotes neck movement as well as increases tension in the neck muscles.
In some instances, a cervical brace or collar is used to effectively control the symptoms due to neck crepitus.
