A choking boy was saved by CPR by an Eskasoni man. It was a regular family trip to the grocery store when it turned tragic if not for the rapid actions of an Eskasoni man.
Kerri Manuel of Sydney picked up her 3-year old son from daycare and made a pit stop at the Sydney River Superstore to pick up a few items. She handed Josh a pack of raisins as a snack while they shopped.
They were almost done with shopping and a raisin got stuck in his throat. Manuel noted that she knows first aid but when confronted with the situation when her own child required emergency care, she froze.
She was patting the child on his back and trying to make him talk, but he was not talking and pointing at his neck. Sherman Cremo knew that the child was choking. He put him upside down and performed the Heimlich maneuver 3 times until his breath came back and the raisin popped out.
The 25-year old Eskasoni resident had first aid training including CPR and the Heimlich maneuver. He graduated from a firefighting school and a member of the community fire department.
According to Cremo, it is not the first time that he used his first aid training in case of an emergency and the result was not as happy as it was with Josh’s case. He attempted to save an elderly woman from his community who was in cardiac arrest but despite his efforts, she died.
Life-saving skills
The incident clearly shows the importance of learning life-saving skills. If you want to be prepared to help others in emergencies, it is best to enroll in a first aid course so that you will learn these life-saving skills.
