Council extends mandatory mask rules and tightens fines for repeat violators

Fact Checked

Flouting the face-covering bylaw can now land you a $100 ticket with steeper penalties for repeat offenses.

The city council approved changes to the mandatory mask rules, doubling the fine for failing to wear a mask where it is required. The city officials will report back on possibly changing or repealing the bylaw a year from now unless medical advice deems it safe to lift the mandate earlier.

Calgary’s temporary bylaw came into force in August when the province was recommending masks to prevent the spread of COVID-19 but resisting laying down official rules. The Alberta government has now rolled out provincewide mask rules, but Calgary has mandated face coverings on public transit and publicly accessible indoor spaces for months.

The city’s updated mask bylaw starts with $100 fines, increasing to $200 for the second offense and $300 for third and subsequent offenses beyond that.

The provincewide mask rules broaden the scope of the city’s rules, mandating masks in indoor workplaces – private spaces that city bylaws do not reach.
