Explosive diarrhea is defined as forceful bowel movement. The contractions of the bowels that help in passing feces becomes stronger and forceful. This increases the expulsion and loudness of the bowel movements.
What are the usual causes?
The common causes of severe diarrhea include:
- Viral and bacterial infection – bacteria such as E. coli and salmonella can result to diarrhea, especially contaminated food and fluids. Some of the viruses that can cause explosive diarrhea include norovirus, rotavirus and other forms of viral gastroenteritis.
- Parasitic infection – parasites such as cryptosporidium and Giardia lamblia can cause severe diarrhea among those with weak immune systems.
- Bowel diseases – diarrhea is a common issue among those who have Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis or inflammatory bowel disease
- Medications – various drugs can cause diarrhea such as antibiotics, drugs for acid reflux or heartburn and chemotherapy drugs.
- Food intolerance or allergies
Management of explosive diarrhea
Generally, the treatment involves management of the symptoms while waiting for the diarrhea to pass. The main treatment for explosive diarrhea is to replace electrolytes and fluids.
It is vital to drink more fluids such as water, broths or juices. Oral hydration solutions are specially formulated for children and infants which contain essential electrolytes.
Over-the-counter anti-diarrheal drugs can be used if the stool is not black or streaked with blood.
Outlook
In most cases, explosive diarrhea settles without treatment. Oftentimes though, medical care is required especially if the diarrhea puts the individual at risk for dehydration.
