What is pompholyx?

Fact Checked

Pompholyx is a form of eczema that triggers the formation of miniature blisters across the palms, fingers and even on the soles of the feet. It can affect individuals of all ages but most often affects adults.

What are the signs?

Pompholyx generally starts as significant itchiness and burning sensation in the skin on the fingers and hands. The sides and palms of the fingers erupt into miniature blisters that might drain fluid.

In serious cases, the blisters become enlarged and even spread to the back part of the feet, hands and limbs. The skin can also become infected. The indications of infection include blisters that become painful, drainage of pus or formation of crust.

In most cases, the blisters typically heal after a few weeks. The skin is likely to dry out and eventually peel or crack as it starts to heal.

What are the causes?

It is not precisely clear what triggers pompholyx but can be instigated or worsened by the following:

  • Fungal skin infection – this might be present on the hands or at a faraway site from the blisters that requires treatment
  • Reaction to certain substances or allergens such as detergents, metals, soap, household chemicals, shampoo, perfume or cosmetic products
  • Sweating – the condition is common during the summer and spring season especially in areas with warm climates
  • Stress

In most instances, pompholyx settles on its own in a few weeks. Luckily, treatment options can help alleviate the symptoms.

Oftentimes, the condition might occur only once and do not recur, but it often comes and goes over several months or years. Exposure to any triggers can result to flare-ups. In some cases, though, it can be continuous and hard to manage.

Management of pompholyx

Skin protection

The individual should avoid exposure to anything that can irritate the skin such as shampoos, soaps and other household chemicals.

An emollient can be used as a substitute to soap and wear cotton-lined gloves if at risk for contact with other irritating substances. Any blisters should not be ruptured and allowed to heal on their own. If large, the doctor might drain them.

Symptom relief

The main treatment options that are suggested in managing the symptoms of pompholyx include:

  • Emollients or moisturizers – these helps prevent the skin from drying up
  • Steroid creams – works by reducing the inflammation and irritation as well as allow the skin to heal

Other treatment options include the following:

  • Immerse the hands in a diluted solution of potassium permanganate for 10-15 minutes once or twice in a day for up to 5 days
  • Antihistamines help lessen the itchiness as well as allow the individual to sleep at night
